Lagos residents generate 15,000 tons of waste per day, of which only 40 percent is collected by the municipal government. People living in informal settlements, without formal waste collection services, are at risk of diseases, loss of productivity and undue psychological stress.
Wecyclers is a pioneering rewards-for-recycling platform, incentivising people in low-income communities to exchange recyclable waste - which collectors pick up from households on cargo bikes or “wecycles” - for essential goods. The waste is then taken to a hub for sorting. As the enterprise has grown, motorised tricycles, vans and trucks have also been incorporated so as to expand the reach across Lagos.
Service subscribers are rewarded with points per kilogram of recycled waste, which can then be exchanged for food and household items. Recyclable material is turned into new items including tissue paper, stuffing for bedding materials, sturdy plastic furniture, aluminium sheets and nylon bags.
TRANSFORM has helped build out Wecycler’s franchise programme, expanding into three additional states, doubling its collection volumes and creating over 300 indirect jobs. The initiative has also helped with processing equipment to empower franchises as well as developing training materials for franchisees and improving the technology platform so as to provide tools to help the franchises track performance in real time.
