Firmenich is an agro-business supplier, providing mint for oral care from Uttar Pradesh in India. With the Seva Trust, who promote education and development in rural India, and Firmenich, a global buyer and distributor of flavours and fragrances, TRANSFORM is working to promote sustainable and regenerative mint farming practices in Uttar Pradesh.
Historically, mint has been grown by small scale subsistence farmers as a cash crop. Typically they use poor irrigation and fertilisation practices and the yield per acre is low. Due to middle men and dealer-to-dealer trading the price paid to the farmer is low and traceability in the supply chain is poor. The Regenerating Mint with Farmer Champions project will aim to improve farming practices, increase crop yield and boost incomes for the rural community.
This will be delivered through a farmer champion model. A group will be trained in improved farming practices and enabled to train their peers by demonstrating the benefit of the improved approach. By working with TRANSFORM, the scale, pace and ambition of the programme has been significantly increased so more farming communities can benefit.
