Flexible plastic accounts for between three and five percent of municipal waste in India, measuring 3.6 million tonnes annually. Flexible plastic contributes 22 percent of plastic waste which leaks into the environment - often ending up in landfills, oceans, rivers or lakes - rather than being brought back into the circular economy.
Recity is an impact-focused organisation innovating solutions to maximise the circular economy of all kinds of plastics, including low-value and flexibles. Recity has enabled the circularity of 53,000 tonnes of waste from the environment, professionalised 2,700 waste workers and aims to maximise the circularity of 350,000 tonnes of plastics across 100 cities. Through this project, Recity aims to create circular loops for flexible plastic by finding alternative product applications so as to reduce the leakage into the environment.
TRANSFORM will enable Recity to trial and test batches of flexible plastic waste to find three product applications through mechanical and chemical recycling and create an industry for recycled post-consumer flexible plastic waste.
