From 2016 to 2019, Unilever UK and Bopinc collaborated on an innovation process that led to a unique proposition for low-income households to enjoy solar energy. The product that was designed with Eight19 and Marble Designs combines aspiration and affordability through a modular system that allows low-income consumers to expand the system when new funds are available. That way consumers add more power and appliances such as lights or radios. To support sales of the product, they engaged with last mile distributors. Actual sales of the product did not take place in the project.
TRANSFORM helped develop the product and enable consumer testing. The project provided valuable insights into lean product innovation and the solar market in Kenya.
